ONE
BRIGHT MORNING
|
"delightful…
assured… tough… soaring..."
Geoff Chapman Toronto Star
ONE
BRIGHT MORNING
on Cordova Bay Records, contains
eight tunes, six of which are recent Quarrington
originals, ranging through Swing, Latin,
and African grooves. (The other two are
Monk's classic "'Round Midnight"
done as a fast salsa, and Bronislau
Kaper's lilting "Hi Lilly, Hi Lo").
The recording features a stellar collection
of Toronto players, like Bernie Senensky
and Brian Dickinson on piano, Kirk
McDonald and Shawn Nykwist on
saxes, Barry Elmes on drums, and
Kieran Overs on bass. Some tracks
are graced by the addition of Kevin
Turcotte on trumpet and Terry Lukiwski
on trombone.

| DEEP
RIVER |
|
The
versatile guitarist/composer follows
up his acclaimed 1999 release, ONE
BRIGHT MORNING with DEEP
RIVER a simpler, more
profound musical statement. He is
joined by Juno-winning saxophonist
Pat LaBarbera, world-famous
bassist Neil Swainson, fiery
drummer Greg Pilo, and, on
several tunes, veteran keyboardist
Doug Riley, on B-3 and Fender
Rhodes. The ensemble is smaller
than the last time out, and the
music has a fiercer, more vital,
energy. This is music with passion,
depth, and a relentless swing.

SWING
STREET
|
This
independent CD, released in July
2003 [Blue Gardenia 0301], features
Tony Quarrington on
electric guitar and vocals, Ron
Davis on piano, and Ka-cheung
Liu on bass. This was the trio
that recently wound up an almost
four-year stint at Toronto's REX
JAZZ AND
BLUES BAR. The core group
is joined on the recording by guests
Kelly Jefferson [Time Warp]
on tenor sax, and Sarah Latendresse
on vocals. The album contains 15
tunes, 14 gems from songwriting's
golden decades, such as Cherokee,
Sweet Lorraine, Paper
Moon, and I Got Rhythm
: as well as one original, a bouncy
little blues called SWING
STREET, which Tony Quarrington
wrote for the band. The repertoire
is melodic and infectious, and the
grooves are swinging at all tempos,
including the ridiculously fast
Cherokee [As someone once
said, many of Swing Street's
tempos are actually illegal in certain
municipalities.] Swing Street
was heard at 2004'sTORONTO
DOWNTOWN JAZZ FESTIVAL,
playing behind JIM
GALLOWAY, at Traders'
Lounge, the Sheraton, and at
Nathan Phillips Square..
